Astafyev Port's giant canopy nears completion to slash coal dust pollution
Astafyev Port is nearing the finish of a major project—a vast canopy over its coal unloading area. The structure, designed to reduce dust pollution, stands over 33 metres tall and covers more than 10,000 square metres. Construction is set to wrap up by the third quarter of 2026, marking a key step toward greener operations at the terminal. Work on the canopy began with 12 reinforced concrete foundations, each rising 12 metres high. These support a framework made of tens of thousands of steel-aluminium parts, built to endure the harsh climate of Primorsky Krai. The project brought together an international team, including Spanish firm Gaptec and local companies T-Stroy and Alpar Plus.
A protective curtain now surrounds the unloading zone, blocking coal dust from spreading. The port also uses a specialised vacuum machine to collect dust and debris, which can double as a street cleaner for nearby areas. These measures add to the terminal’s existing 12 dust suppression systems, already in place for eco-friendly coal handling. Once complete, the canopy will allow Astafyev Port to shift entirely to enclosed coal transshipment. This change aims to cut emissions and improve air quality around the facility.
The new canopy will cover a 206-metre-long stretch of the unloading area, significantly reducing dust release. With completion expected by late 2026, the project reinforces the port’s commitment to modern, low-impact coal handling. The upgrades will also enhance operational efficiency while meeting stricter environmental standards.
