Astana AI Film Festival Opens $1M Competition for AI-Generated Shorts
The first Astana AI Film Festival has launched its international competition, inviting creators to submit AI-generated short films. With a prize fund of $1 million, the event aims to showcase cutting-edge digital storytelling and AI-driven filmmaking from around the world. Applications opened this week, with submissions accepted until August 15. Filmmakers must upload their work—short films of up to 10 minutes—along with a project description via the festival’s online platform. Entry is free, and the competition welcomes individuals and teams of any age or experience level.
To qualify, films must rely on 'full AI' technologies, meaning AI tools should be the primary method of production. The festival will feature two sections: The Future Worth Living In and an open competition. The latter will recognise excellence in directing, visual language, storytelling, concept development, and character design.
An international jury will review the shortlisted projects, selecting winners from 10 films in the main competition and 15 in the open category. The festival’s programme will also include an AI content conference, panel discussions, and pitching sessions for creators and producers. Screenings and the awards ceremony are set for September 28 to October 1 in Astana. The event positions itself as a major hub for AI-driven creativity in film. Winners will share a $1 million prize fund, with the festival aiming to establish itself as a key platform for emerging digital art forms. Final selections and awards will be announced during the autumn event in Kazakhstan’s capital.
