Astana deploys AI traffic systems to combat congestion and boost safety

Astana is rolling out AI-powered traffic monitoring systems as part of the Astana Smart City initiative. These intelligent systems automatically detect violations and are expected to ease congestion and reduce accidents.

Official figures show that around 456,000 vehicles are registered in the capital, with an estimated 50,000 more operating without registration. The city's vehicle fleet grows by roughly 10 percent each year. Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek briefed the interagency government commission on the situation.

"To improve traffic conditions and enhance safety, we are implementing a Comprehensive Transport Development Program," Kassymbek said. "A unified operator—the Traffic Management Center—has been established to coordinate parking, traffic flows, signal control, towing, transport planning, and road safety measures."

Parts of the system have already been automated. Out of 818 traffic lights, 582 now adjust in real time based on road congestion.
