Astana's bold ecopark project transforms Small Taldykol Lake by 2024

Astana is pushing ahead with plans to transform the area around Small Taldykol Lake into a sprawling ecopark. Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek recently outlined the project’s progress, calling it one of the city’s most important initiatives for 2024. The scheme aims to create a peaceful natural retreat while protecting local biodiversity. Work on the ecopark has already begun, with engineering teams preparing the site for major changes. This year, the city will focus on building essential infrastructure, including technical facilities with a filtration system and new wells to stabilise the lake’s water levels. The first phase of planting over 1.1 million trees and shrubs will start in autumn, marking the beginning of large-scale greening efforts.

The project extends beyond the lake area. Across Astana, more than 170 residential courtyards and public spaces will receive upgrades as part of the city’s wider revitalisation plan. By next year, the focus will shift to finishing walking paths and setting up quiet zones for relaxation. The first routes and green spaces, however, will open to the public before the end of 2024. The ecopark’s development will introduce new recreational areas while safeguarding the environment. With water management systems, extensive planting, and improved public spaces, the project is set to reshape the lake’s surroundings. Residents can expect the first upgrades and green zones to become accessible within months.
