Athens metro's Green Line faces delays as major upgrades await approval

The Athens metro and tram company (STASY) will conduct maintenance works on the metro's Line 1 (Green Line) line between Piraeus and Kifissia, aiming to reduce delays and improve travel conditions for passengers, company officials have told Kathimerini.

"For the first time we are proceeding with maintenance of the concrete track since the line was renovated between 2009-2010," company sources said, referring to a €4.9 million project excluding VAT that the company announced.

The works include track alignment, repairs to switches and restoration of subsidence between Irini and Iraklio stations, where trains currently operate at reduced speeds. Authorities said the project also includes inspections and repairs of worn materials across the line.

The section between Faliro and Piraeus remains a key issue, as trains move at speeds of up to 20 km/h due to long-standing infrastructure problems. "Now in this section the train goes up to 20 km/h. To increase it we must proceed with renovation," the sources said.

STASY said it is considering either a full renovation or undergrounding of the section and added that work could begin even in 2026 if funding is approved.

Separate works include inspections of pedestrian bridges, shelters and railway bridges across the network, while a major bridge upgrade project remains pending approval, delaying its implementation.
