B31 highway in Freiburg faces major summer repairs and delays

Major repairs are coming to the B31 federal highway in Freiburg this summer. The work will focus on damaged sections of the roadway and entry ramps. Drivers should expect delays as lanes narrow during construction.

The project kicks off in early June and runs until early August, overlapping with the summer holiday season. Crews will start on the outbound lanes toward Freiburg's outskirts. Stormwater drainage improvements are also planned for the opposite side of the highway this year.

Routine inspections uncovered cracks in the pavement, with some extending into deeper layers. To manage traffic, only one lane will remain open in each direction. This setup is likely to cause periodic congestion, particularly during peak travel times.

The city of Freiburg im Breisgau helped coordinate the timeline to avoid clashes with other nearby construction. Further upgrades are already lined up for next year, targeting the concrete roadway between Lehen and the motorway junction. However, repairs to the inbound lanes toward the city centre won't begin until 2028 under current plans.

The cost of this year's work will be announced once construction contracts are finalised and awarded.

Drivers using the B31 should prepare for slower journeys over the summer. The single-lane restrictions and overlapping holiday traffic may increase travel times. For the latest updates on road closures or detours, residents are advised to check with Freiburg's city traffic office or local news sources.
