Basel's cross-border S-Bahn debuts its first train ahead of 2030 launch
The first train for Basel's future cross-border S-Bahn network has been completed, with the new service set to improve connections between Switzerland and France from 2030.
Train manufacturer Stadler has finalized the first vehicle for the cross-border Basel S-Bahn. According to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the train will leave Stadler's plant in Erlen next Monday (April 27). The unit is part of an order for 33 trains destined for routes linking northwestern Switzerland with the Alsace region. Two lines are planned: the S2, running from Olten to Basel and Mulhouse, and the S4, connecting Laufen, Basel, and Saint-Louis. The expanded service is scheduled to launch by the end of 2030.
Over the coming months, additional pre-series trains will be delivered, followed by extensive testing and certification runs.
