Battery trains to replace diesel on Halle–Querfurt rail route by 2032
Battery-powered trains are set to replace diesel railcars on the S11 route from Halle to Querfurt. The change aims to modernise transport in Saxony-Anhalt and improve regional connectivity. A successful test run of the Siemens Mireo Plus B model has already taken place on the line. The S11 route currently uses diesel railcars, but only the section between Halle and Merseburg has overhead lines. Beyond Merseburg, the tracks lack electrification, forcing reliance on diesel power.
The new battery trains can recharge directly from existing overhead lines on the electrified section. For the rest of the journey, they switch to battery power, eliminating the need for diesel. NASA has identified this technology as the most cost-effective solution for non-electrified routes.
The state ministry plans to upgrade trains and enhance services in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Sven Haller, State Secretary, highlighted the role of public transport in strengthening regional links. Battery-powered trains will begin operating on the S11 by 2032 at the latest.
Around one-third of Saxony-Anhalt’s rail network still lacks overhead lines. NASA is gradually phasing out older vehicles in favour of the new battery trains. The shift to battery trains will end diesel dependence on the S11 route. Passengers will benefit from cleaner and more modern transport. The change also supports broader efforts to electrify Saxony-Anhalt’s rail network.
