Beijing's Subway Now Allows Bikes on Sundays in Pilot Program

Beijing has introduced a new pilot scheme allowing passengers to bring bicycles onto the subway on Sundays. The ‘Rail + Cycling’ service aims to make travel more flexible for cyclists across the city’s metro network. The trial runs at 11 stations on four subway lines but only operates on weekends. Passengers can now carry single-seat, human-powered bicycles with wheel diameters up to 71 centimetres. Previously, stricter size and weight restrictions applied.

A flat fare of 30 yuan ($4.41) covers one person and one bicycle for a single journey on the same day. There is no time limit on travel, and tickets can be bought via the Yitongxing mobile app for any weekend within the next 30 days. Staff will check bicycle sizes at security points before entry. The scheme expands on earlier rules, offering cyclists a more convenient way to combine cycling with subway travel.

The pilot service provides a clearer fare structure and relaxed size rules for cyclists. It will run at selected stations, giving riders a new option for weekend transport. Officials have not yet announced how long the trial will last.
