Berlin's U-Bahn slowly recovers after icy weather chaos disrupts key lines
Berlin's U-Bahn services are slowly returning to normal after days of icy weather caused widespread delays. Limited sections of lines U2 and U3 have reopened, though some routes remain suspended. Buses and trams, however, have been running on schedule throughout the disruption.
Last week, freezing temperatures led to major problems across Berlin's transport network. Trams were temporarily halted when overhead lines iced over, forcing crews to clear the routes. Specialised vehicles were brought in to keep both trams and U-Bahn tracks free of ice.
On the U-Bahn, U2 trains are now operating between Pankow and Potsdamer Platz, while U3 runs from Spichernstraße to Breitenbachplatz. However, the U3 stretch between Warschauer Straße and Gleisdreieck remains closed, with replacement buses in service. BVG teams are currently working to de-ice the U2 section between Zoologischer Garten and Potsdamer Platz.
The U3 segment towards Krumme Lanke station is expected to reopen soon. Despite the challenges, all bus and tram lines have continued running as planned.
While some U-Bahn sections remain out of service, progress is being made to restore full operations. The BVG has not released figures on how passenger numbers have been affected by the icy conditions. Further updates will depend on weather developments in the coming days.
