Europaplatz is being redesigned - work begins in February - Berlin’s Europacity Square to get a €3.1M green and accessible makeover by 2026

Europacity Square in front of Berlin Central Station will undergo a major renovation starting on 2 February 2023. The project, led by construction firm Strabag, aims to transform the area into a more welcoming station forecourt by the first half of 2026. The redesign includes improved accessibility, greenery, and modern transport links.

The €3.1 million renovation will be carried out in stages to keep disruption to a minimum. Throughout the work, the central station will remain accessible via Europacity Square. GEG German Entertainment AG will oversee the project, with Strabag handling the construction.

Key improvements include barrier-free pathways, new seating, and waiting areas. Thirty heat-resistant trees will be planted to enhance the square’s appearance. A covered bicycle parking facility for 220 bikes and eight cargo bikes is also planned. The bus stop at the station forecourt will receive updated digital displays. The pedestrian crossing to the tram will be extended by five metres for better safety. Vehicular traffic will face restrictions, though taxis can still use Washington Square to reach the station.

The renovation is set to complete by mid-2026. Once finished, Europacity Square will feature improved pedestrian access, more green spaces, and upgraded transport facilities. The phased approach ensures the station remains open while work progresses.
