Tap water in MV - still one of the best worldwide? - Boil-Water Advisories Disrupt Life for Thousands in Northern Germany
Germany's tap water is renowned for its high quality, ranking among the best globally. Yet even here, occasional boil-water advisories are issued when microbial contamination is detected. These orders ensure public safety but can disrupt daily life for thousands of residents at a time.
In September 2025, a major boil-water notice affected 60,000 people in Greifswald after intestinal bacteria were found in the supply. Around the same time, 7,900 residents in the Grimmen area of Vorpommern-Rügen district received a similar warning. Then, in February 2026, another 14,000 people across several municipalities in Vorpommern-Greifswald were told to boil their tap water.
Identifying the exact source of contamination can take time. In the February 2026 incident, authorities in Ueckermünde and Eggesin struggled to immediately pinpoint the cause. While such cases are rare, they highlight the challenges in maintaining water safety.
Most boil-water orders in the region target specific facilities rather than entire communities. Rostock district, for example, has issued notices for individual buildings but never for whole towns. Despite these incidents, officials report no overall rise in contamination cases, with Vorpommern-Greifswald averaging just one boil-water order per year in recent times.
To further improve safety, some experts suggest UV disinfection, which can eliminate 99.9 percent of microbes and viruses. This method could reduce the risk of future contamination events.
Boil-water advisories remain a precautionary measure when intestinal pathogens like E. coli or enterococci are detected. While incidents are infrequent, they underscore the need for ongoing vigilance in water testing. Local authorities continue to monitor supplies closely to prevent wider disruptions.
