Bolt secures key licence and invests R3bn in South Africa's booming ride-hailing market

Bolt has strengthened its position in South Africa after securing a key operating licence from the National Public Transport Regulator (NPTR). The company has also invested R3 billion (€150 million) in the country over the past decade, making it one of its largest markets worldwide. With over 30 million passengers served, Bolt continues to expand its services in the region.

Since entering the South African market, Bolt has grown rapidly, becoming a major player in ride-hailing. The platform now supports more than 500,000 drivers, offering affordable and accessible transport options. Its success stems from a focus on local relevance, affordability, and wide availability.

In 2025, Bolt reinforced its commitment to local entrepreneurs by providing over R400,000 in seed funding to ten startups through its Accelerator Programme. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader goal of boosting economic participation through platform-based mobility. Looking ahead, Bolt plans to invest €100 million globally between 2024 and 2027 to improve safety features. In South Africa, the company will also prioritise innovation, driver support, and enhanced safety measures in the coming years.

Bolt’s continued investment and regulatory approval highlight its long-term focus on South Africa. The company’s expansion, driver growth, and funding initiatives reflect its role in shaping the country’s shared mobility sector. Future efforts will centre on safety upgrades and supporting local economic opportunities.
