Bremen has approved a €15 million plan to upgrade its transport network over the next two years. The scheme will focus on roads, cycle lanes and footpaths across all city districts. Funding will come from federal sources, with work set to begin as early as next year. The renovation programme targets key routes including Senator-Apelt-Straße, Ritterhuder Heerstraße and Kurt-Schumacher-Allee. Other roads like Vahrer Straße, Osterdeich and Hammersbecker Straße will also receive upgrades. Projects were chosen based on ongoing assessments by the Road and Traffic Authority.
The work will cover resurfacing roads, replacing drainage channels and curbs, and restoring paved areas. Road markings will be repainted, while bike and pedestrian paths along Franz-Schütte-Allee and Hermann-Osterloh-Straße will also be improved. Most construction is scheduled for the second half of 2026, though some measures will start earlier under existing contracts. Eighteen separate initiatives, costing around €6.9 million, are planned for 2026 alone. The city's transport network includes roughly 1,450 kilometres of roads and 1,300 kilometres of dedicated bike and pedestrian paths.
The programme will roll out across Bremen's districts, with federal funding ensuring widespread improvements. Roads, cycle lanes and footpaths will all see upgrades, aiming to modernise the city's transport infrastructure. Work is expected to continue through 2027.
