Cebu City cracks down on traffic chaos with new lane discipline rules
Cebu City is set to implement stricter traffic rules under a new ordinance. The Lane Discipline Ordinance, proposed by Councilor Reynaldo Balbona Jr., targets chronic congestion and rising motorcycle accidents. Officials plan to roll out the changes in stages, starting with a detailed traffic study.
The ordinance divides lanes into specific uses. The leftmost lane will serve as an overtaking or fast lane for faster-moving vehicles. Meanwhile, the rightmost lane becomes a motorcycle-preferred route, aiming to reduce conflicts between bikes and larger vehicles.
Before enforcement begins, the city will install clear signage and road markings. The Cebu City Transportation Office will lead the effort, working alongside the Philippine National Police and local barangay officials. Implementation kicks off with a 60-day traffic engineering study to assess current flow patterns. The measure follows growing concerns over road safety and gridlock. Authorities hope the structured lane system will cut down on collisions while improving overall traffic movement.
The new rules will take effect only after all preparations are complete. Officials expect the changes to ease congestion and lower accident rates on major roads. The ordinance marks Cebu City’s latest push to modernise its traffic management system.
