Chemnitz's €900K Lützowstraße upgrade to boost accessibility and infrastructure

A major construction project on Lützowstraße in Chemnitz will begin on 2 March 2023. The work aims to upgrade roads, utilities, and public transport infrastructure between Deulichstraße and Horststraße. The total cost of the project is expected to reach around €900,000.

The project will start at the Lützowstraße/Deulichstraße intersection and move towards Horststraße. A full road closure will be in place, with traffic redirected via Neefestraße, Carl-Hamel-Straße, and Stollberger Straße. Residents will receive written notices about changes to waste collection, recycling, parking, and access routes.

Utility provider Versorger eins will replace roughly 150 metres of old drinking water pipes with new ductile iron piping. Meanwhile, Chemnitz Municipal Waste Management (ESC) will repair the combined sewer system and replace all residential connection lines and street drainage pipes.

The Road and Civil Engineering Office will rebuild the road surface and improve pedestrian safety. Curb extensions will be added at the Lützowstraße/Deulichstraße intersection, while the sidewalk gradient will be adjusted to 2%. At the Horststraße bus stop, accessibility upgrades include a 5 cm high curb cutout with tactile paving, a widened 3.5 m waiting area, and acoustic signals for visually impaired passengers.

Chemnitz-based company Dietmar Mothes GmbH has been contracted to carry out the work. The project is scheduled for completion by October 2026.

The improvements will modernise infrastructure and enhance accessibility for pedestrians and public transport users. Roadworks alone account for €260,000 of the total €900,000 budget. Once finished, the upgraded section of Lützowstraße will feature safer crossings, better drainage, and a fully accessible bus stop.
