Cherokee County tackles Bells Ferry Road's traffic and safety challenges
Cherokee County is revisiting its Livable Centers Initiative to tackle growth along Bells Ferry Road. The busy three-mile stretch between Kellogg Creek Road and Alabama Road now faces heavy traffic and safety concerns. Residents and officials will gather this week to discuss potential improvements.
For decades, Bells Ferry Road has seen rapid development. Fred Burns, who has lived in the area for 30 years, recalls the transformation as dozens of new homes and businesses appeared. A recent road-widening project aimed to ease congestion, but traffic remains a daily issue for the thousands commuting to work, school, or home.
Willie Magana, a local resident, argues the road has become overcrowded. County leaders are now focusing on solutions through the Livable Centers Initiative, which targets economic growth, pedestrian safety, and better transport links. Proposed changes include upgraded intersections, new sidewalks, microtransit options, and mixed-use developments while preserving affordable housing. Catherine Long, Cherokee County's Planning Division Manager, stresses the need to balance growth with available resources. To gather public input, an open house will take place on Thursday evening at Greater Church on Bells Ferry Road. The event runs from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, offering residents a chance to share their views.
The initiative seeks to address long-standing challenges along Bells Ferry Road. If implemented, the proposed updates could reshape transport, housing, and safety in the area. The county will use feedback from Thursday's meeting to guide future decisions.
