Chkalov Airport celebrates 10 years as Nizhny Novgorod's aviation gateway

Nizhny Novgorod's Chkalov Airport is marking a decade since its modern passenger terminal opened in late March 2016. The hub quickly became a key transport centre for the region, blending advanced technology with passenger comfort from the start. The terminal launched with cutting-edge facilities designed to match global aviation standards. It catered to both business and leisure travellers, offering routes across multiple destinations. Over the years, its role in the region's transport network grew significantly.

Passenger numbers climbed from around 1.5 million in 2016 to over 3.5 million by 2019. The pandemic caused a sharp drop to under 1 million in 2020, but recovery brought figures back to roughly 2.8 million by 2025. International connections expanded too, peaking at 15 routes before COVID-19 and stabilising at around 10 by 2025, including direct flights to Istanbul and Dubai. To celebrate the anniversary, the airport has introduced special promotions for travellers. Some passengers received commemorative souvenirs, while staff were acknowledged for their contributions to the hub's development. The terminal's infrastructure has remained up to date, continuing to meet industry demands.

A decade after its opening, Chkalov Airport remains a vital transport link for Nizhny Novgorod. The terminal's modern design and ongoing upgrades ensure it stays aligned with major aviation centres. Its growth reflects the region's increasing connectivity and economic activity.
