Cologne motorway closure extended to 2027 due to unexpected delays

A major motorway closure near Cologne has been extended far beyond its original schedule. The overpass from the A3 onto the B55a toward Cologne was meant to shut for just a few weeks—but repairs will now keep it closed until February 2027. Autobahn GmbH has blamed the delay on 'internal coordination difficulties' without offering further explanation.

The closure at Cologne-East motorway junction began in mid-February. Initially, the work was set to finish by March 9, 2026, allowing drivers to resume their usual routes. But damage to the roadway bridge proved more severe than expected, forcing a longer shutdown.

Drivers can no longer switch routes at the affected overpass. Instead, a diversion has been set up via the Cologne-Merheim junction. This alternative route will remain in place for nearly a full year longer than first planned. Autobahn GmbH has not detailed the exact nature of the coordination issues causing the delay. The extended timeline means repairs will now wrap up in early 2027, leaving commuters and freight traffic to rely on the detour for months to come.

The prolonged closure will keep the overpass out of service until February 2027. Drivers heading toward Cologne must continue using the Merheim junction as their only alternative. The extended repairs highlight the challenges of managing major infrastructure projects on busy motorway networks.
