Multipurpose vessel 'Neuwerk' falls out due to defect - Critical icebreaker Neuwerk sidelined by malfunction near Rügen
A key icebreaker vessel, the Neuwerk, has been forced out of service after a technical malfunction near Rügen. The ship, responsible for keeping shipping lanes clear for the island's LNG import terminal, is now undergoing repairs at Mukran Port.
The Neuwerk had been operating since November 2022 to maintain ice-free access for ships heading to the LNG terminal. Its duties were set to continue until at least February 2026. The vessel's sudden breakdown has disrupted these operations.
While repairs take place, the chartered tugboat VB Bremen Fighter will step in as a temporary replacement. Authorities have not yet confirmed how long the Neuwerk will remain docked or when it will resume its usual icebreaking tasks.
The VB Bremen Fighter is now handling icebreaking duties to ensure ships can still reach the LNG terminal. The Neuwerk's return to service depends on the completion of repairs, though no timeline has been given. The terminal's operations remain unaffected for now.
