Davao Region Plans Two New Airports to Boost Growth and Connectivity

Plans for new airports in the Davao region are moving forward as part of long-term development goals. The Regional Development Council (RDC) has been studying proposals to boost connectivity and economic growth. Two key projects—a modern airport in Davao Occidental and an upgrade to Mati Airport in Davao Oriental—are now under consideration.

The idea of a second major airport in the region first appeared in 2015. Back then, the RDC suggested building a modern facility alongside the existing Davao International Airport. Now, the focus has shifted to Davao Occidental, where a proposed airport could attract more tourists and investors. Malita, a municipality in the province, has been named as a potential location, though further studies are still needed.

Currently, Davao Occidental has only one private airstrip in Malita, which sees little use. The new project aims to change that by improving transport links and driving local growth. Priscilla Sonido, regional director of the Department of Economy, Planning and Development, has publicly backed the initiative, calling it a key part of the Davao Region Development Master Plan. Meanwhile, the RDC is also pushing for upgrades to Mati Airport in Davao Oriental. A ₱700 million budget has been set aside for 2026 to fund a modern passenger terminal, longer runways, and expanded parking. These improvements are expected to enhance the airport’s capacity and efficiency.

The proposed Davao Occidental airport and the Mati Airport upgrade represent major steps in the region’s infrastructure plans. If approved, both projects would strengthen transport networks and support economic expansion. Further feasibility studies will determine the next stages for each development.
