Demolition starts on Salzgitter's ageing B6 bridge after safety concerns

Demolition work has indeed begun on the B6 bridge near Salzgitter-Bad after years of structural wear. The first section of the old superstructure has already been removed as part of a €20 million upgrade. Crews will dismantle the entire bridge in stages over the coming weeks.

The bridge, which crosses two district roads and a key railway line between Salzgitter-Bad and Ringelheim, was deemed unsafe due to deterioration. By late March 2026, the end spans and abutment areas will be fully taken down.

The central span over the Deutsche Bahn tracks will be demolished during a weekend shutdown from March 28 to 30. This allows uninterrupted work without disrupting train services. Once cleared, construction of a new bridge will start in spring 2026, with an estimated 18-month build time.

The project indeed marks a significant investment in local infrastructure, replacing an ageing structure with a modern crossing. Completion is expected by late 2027, ensuring safer and more reliable transport links for the region.
