Deutsche Bahn's ICE L trains to revolutionize Dortmund-Oberstdorf route by 2026

Deutsche Bahn is upgrading services on the Dortmund to Oberstdorf route. Starting in July 2026, the old Intercity trains will be replaced by modern ICE L models. The change aims to improve passenger comfort and accessibility along the line.

Four stations—Kempten, Immenstadt, Blaichach, and Sonthofen—are preparing for the new trains. Their platforms are being raised to 76 centimetres to allow barrier-free boarding. This height matches the ICE L's design, making it easier for passengers with mobility needs.

The ICE L promises a noticeable upgrade in travel quality. Every carriage will feature enhanced comfort compared to the current Intercity fleet. Deutsche Bahn has not yet confirmed how many stations in total will receive the new platform height.

The switch to ICE L trains marks a shift toward more accessible and comfortable long-distance travel. Platform upgrades at key stops will support smoother boarding from mid-2026. The exact number of stations receiving the 76-centimetre height remains unconfirmed.
