DHL Express launches AI image recognition for seamless global shipping
DHL Express has introduced an AI-powered image recognition tool for its international shipping service. The new feature allows customers to photograph their items and receive an automated, customs-compliant description. This marks the first large-scale use of such technology in global express shipping.
The system works by analysing photos of shipment items using computer vision. It then generates structured descriptions that meet international customs standards. The goal is to simplify the traditionally manual process of declaring package contents.
Currently, the feature is available in eight markets: Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. No registration is needed—users only require a smartphone or another camera-equipped device to capture images of their items. DHL Express has described accurate shipment descriptions as a key part of the customer experience. The company plans to expand the feature globally in phases throughout 2026.
The new tool removes the need for manual content declarations in express shipping. Customers can now generate compliant descriptions quickly by taking photos of their items. The phased rollout will continue across more markets over the next two years.
