DoorDash boosts driver pay as soaring gas prices squeeze gig workers
DoorDash has announced new financial support for its delivery drivers in the U.S. and Canada. The move comes as global oil prices have climbed sharply since the Iran-Israel conflict escalated in late February 2024. Fuel costs have surged, putting pressure on gig workers who rely on their vehicles for income.
Starting immediately, U.S. drivers using a DoorDash debit card will now earn 10% cash back on gas purchases, up from the previous 2%. Those who travel 125 miles or more while delivering will also receive a weekly fuel payment of up to $15. In Canada, drivers will get up to CAD 36 per week, based on the distance they cover.
The price of oil has risen dramatically since the conflict began. Brent crude, which sat at around $68 per barrel in mid-February 2024, has since spiked to between $80 and $120, with recent figures hovering near $100. On March 24, 2026, Brent crude reached $103.06, while U.S. crude hit $91.39 per barrel. In the U.S., the national average for gasoline now stands at $3.96 per gallon, a 35% jump from just a month ago.
Both support programs for DoorDash drivers will remain in place until April 26.
The surge in oil prices has directly impacted fuel costs, pushing companies like DoorDash to introduce temporary financial relief. Drivers in both countries will benefit from the extra payments, though the long-term effects of the conflict on oil markets remain uncertain. The current measures are set to expire in late April, leaving future adjustments dependent on further developments.
