Edmonton construction firm fined $120K after worker struck by equipment

A construction company has been fined after a worker suffered serious injuries on a major Edmonton project. The incident took place on the Valley West Line in June 2023, leading to legal action against the firm responsible. On 23 June 2023, a worker was struck by equipment while carrying out post-tensioning tasks on the Edmonton Valley West Line. The injury prompted an investigation into safety practices at the site.

Marigold Infrastructure Partners later pleaded guilty to a single charge under occupational health and safety laws. The company admitted it had failed to ensure equipment was properly secured. As a result, a court imposed a fine of $120,000. The Alberta government initially brought 13 separate charges against the company and two related entities. However, these additional counts were later withdrawn.

The fine follows a guilty plea for a breach of workplace safety regulations. The case highlights the risks workers face when equipment is not correctly maintained. No further legal action will be taken against the other entities involved.
