Emirates launches AED 50M solar-powered recycling plant to slash plastic waste
Emirates has expanded its sustainability efforts with a major investment in recycling and eco-friendly materials. The airline’s new closed-loop facility, built for over AED 50 million, turns old serviceware into reusable products. Recent changes also include removing plastic from packaging and replacing single-use items with recycled alternatives. The airline’s recycling plant, run with deSter FZE UAE, holds a Gold sustainability rating from Ecovadis. It processes damaged trays, casseroles, and other items into new serviceware containing up to 25% recycled material. The facility itself operates on solar energy and uses water-efficient systems to cut waste.
Since June 2023, Emirates has recycled more than 88,000 kilograms of plastic from Economy Class meal items. Economy and Premium Economy fleece blankets are now made from recycled polyester, using the equivalent of 28 plastic bottles per blanket. Headset packaging across all cabins has also switched to 100% recycled low-density polyethylene.
Further changes include replacing plastic straws with certified paper versions on all flights. Children’s toys and bags now contain at least 50% recycled content, with plastic wrapping completely removed. In premium cabins, First Class bedding packaging has been swapped for reusable recycled polyester bags. The airline’s initiatives reduce plastic waste while increasing the use of recycled materials. Solar-powered recycling and stricter packaging rules form part of a broader push toward sustainability. These measures aim to cut environmental impact across Emirates’ global operations.
