€6.4M Grant Transforms Gescher's Sports Hall Into an Energy-Efficient Hub
Gescher has secured €6.4 million in funding to renovate its triple sports hall. The grant covers 80 percent of the project costs and comes from the 'Energy-Efficient Public Buildings' programme in North Rhine-Westphalia. The renovation will address long-standing pipe leaks beneath the hall floor. Safety-critical parts will be replaced, and the heating, ventilation, and technical systems will be upgraded. The changing room complex will be demolished and rebuilt, and a new accessible grandstand will be added.
The project aims to cut the building’s primary energy use by at least 50 percent, going beyond legal standards. It also seeks to improve long-term cost efficiency, accessibility, and climate protection. Mayor Anne Kortüm called the funding essential for the hall’s modernisation. Government President Andreas Bothe has publicly backed the initiative. The work will enhance the sports hall’s usability and sustainability. The funding ensures major upgrades while reducing energy consumption. The project aligns with broader regional efforts to improve public infrastructure.
