Floridsdorf tests resident-only parking to combat congestion and commercial vehicles

Floridsdorf is set to trial a resident-only parking scheme to ease congestion in its streets. The plan aims to address complaints about commercial vehicles taking up spaces meant for locals. District officials have now outlined the next steps before any changes take effect.

The scheme would allow up to 30 percent of parking spaces in selected areas to be reserved for Floridsdorf residents with permits. However, before this happens, the transport authority (MA 46) must carry out a detailed survey. This survey will measure how fully the parking areas are used, with occupancy needing to reach at least 90 percent of capacity.

The SPÖ has pushed for action, arguing that large delivery vans and other commercial vehicles with citywide permits are clogging residential streets. District Chair Georg Papai called the situation unacceptable, particularly when oversized vans block spaces intended for residents. Once the survey is complete, a one-year evaluation period will follow to assess the scheme's impact. Exact figures on how many spaces might be freed up remain unclear, as 2022 data is not publicly available. The success of the plan hinges on the survey results and whether the occupancy threshold is met.

If the survey confirms high demand, parts of the parking zones could soon be restricted to permit holders. The district will monitor the trial closely over the next year. The outcome may determine whether similar measures are introduced in other areas facing parking shortages.
