Expansion plan for Frankfurt's rail network approved - Frankfurt Approves Ambitious 2035 Rail Expansion to Transform Urban Travel
Frankfurt's city council has given the green light to a major expansion of its public transport network. The approved plan, titled the Comprehensive Rail Transport Plan 2035 , outlines multi-million-euro investments aimed at upgrading rail-based travel across the city. Officials have described it as a roadmap for future projects rather than an immediate construction blueprint.
The plan focuses on 23 key projects, selected from an initial list of 56 proposals. Among the priorities is a new tram bridge over the Main River, designed to improve connections between different parts of the city. Another significant measure involves extending the underground metro beyond Südbahnhof station, with sections of the route potentially running above ground.
Further improvements are planned for the Bergen-Enkheim district in the east and Eckenheim in the north, where better transport integration is needed. Upgrades to the existing metro system are also part of the strategy, alongside a broader expansion of the tram network.
Mobility Commissioner Wolfgang Siefert, representing the Green Party, clarified that the plan serves as a collection of possible expansion projects for future political decisions. Feasibility studies will now follow to assess the practicality of each measure. The council's approval was widely anticipated, as both the city's executive board and transport committee had already backed the proposals.
With the plan now formally adopted, Frankfurt moves closer to a more connected public transport system. The next steps involve detailed studies to determine which projects will proceed and how they will be funded. If implemented, the changes could reshape travel across the city over the next decade.
