Frankfurt's U5 subway expansion breaks ground with 2029 completion target
Frankfurt has started building a major extension of its U5 subway line along Europa-Allee. The 2.7-kilometre stretch will add four new stations and serve a future neighbourhood of around 30,000 residents. Work is now underway, though delays have pushed completion back to 2029.
Construction began with surface-level stations along Europa-Allee, a key part of Frankfurt's largest infrastructure project. The €515 million extension is managed by Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH (SBEV). To make room for staging areas, 37 trees were transplanted—all originally located west of Emser Brücke, not in Frankfurt-Höchst.
During the build, the left lane on Europa-Allee will close, and the central median will host construction operations. One major task involves excavating a 180-metre-long, 30-metre-wide pit near Skyline Plaza, reaching 24 metres deep. The project's timeline has stretched due to procurement issues and delays in track and rail technology.
The city will initially cover extra costs but anticipates partial funding from the federal government and Hesse. Once finished, the extension will connect Güterplatz, Emser Brücke, Europagarten, and Wohnpark stations to the network.
The U5 extension aims to improve transport for thousands of future residents and workers in the area. With construction now active, the line is set to open in 2029, despite earlier setbacks. The project remains one of Frankfurt's most significant infrastructure investments.
