Freiburg's FR2 bike route shuts down for three weeks of upgrades

A key section of Freiburg's FR2 priority bike route will close for three weeks from Monday, February 2. The shutdown will allow for major infrastructure improvements near the Kleineschholz development area. Cyclists and pedestrians will need to follow a temporary detour during the works.

The closure affects the stretch between Lehener Straße and Sundgauallee. The Parks and Civil Engineering Department will use the time to advance several projects at once. These include finishing the new FR2 bike path, planting trees, setting up a habitat area, and adding greenery to the noise barrier.

During the shutdown, cyclists and walkers will be redirected along Runzmattenweg. The work is part of broader preparations for the Kleineschholz development. While no apartments have been built yet, groundwork is nearly complete, with the first houses set to begin construction in spring. The earliest residents are expected to move in by late 2027.

The three-week closure starts on February 2 and covers a busy section of the FR2 route. Once finished, the upgrades will support both the new bike path and the ongoing Kleineschholz project. Officials have advised users to plan extra time for their journeys while the detour remains in place.
