Georgia's Railway Upgrade Slashes Travel Times on Key Route This Summer
Georgian Railways is upgrading key sections of its network to boost train speeds and cut travel times. The latest works focus on the Kvishkheti-Khashuri route, where repairs and modernisation are now in full swing. Officials say the changes will improve journeys for both passengers and freight services this summer.
Capital repairs are currently underway along a three-kilometre stretch of the Kvishkheti-Khashuri line. Around 200 workers and heavy machinery have been deployed to complete the upgrades. Once finished, trains on this section will reach speeds of up to 100 km/h.
Director General Lasha Abashidze recently visited the site to inspect progress. The improvements form part of a broader push to modernise railway infrastructure across Georgia. For travellers, the most noticeable change will come during the summer, when journeys between Tbilisi and Batumi are set to become faster.
The upgrades aim to enhance passenger comfort while increasing efficiency for freight transport. Georgian Railways has not yet detailed further sections planned for similar improvements by 2025.
The ongoing works on the Kvishkheti-Khashuri line mark a step toward faster rail connections in Georgia. With speeds rising to 100 km/h on the upgraded track, both passenger and cargo services will benefit from reduced travel times. The project reflects wider efforts to modernise the country's railway network.
