Georgia has secured major funding to upgrade its transport infrastructure. The government is seeking USD 175 million from the Asian Development Bank and USD 182 million from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. These investments form part of a larger USD 751 million project to improve the Middle Corridor. Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili and World Bank Regional Director Roland Price signed an agreement to support the initiative. A separate deal between Georgian Railways and the IBRD was also finalised by railway director Lasha Abashidze and Price.
The project will focus on speeding up cargo transport and enhancing safety along the Middle Corridor. Georgian Railways will purchase electric locomotives and build new electrical substations. Additional work includes constructing road sections, interchanges, and implementing safety measures. Institutional strengthening of the railway operator is also planned.
The Roads Department and Georgian Railways will lead the implementation. The World Bank has committed USD 372 million to the overall effort. The upgrades aim to boost cargo efficiency and strengthen supply chains. They are also expected to support Georgia’s long-term economic growth. The project will modernise key transport links and improve operational capacity.
