German Wood Packaging Industry Tackles New EU Rules and Digital Shifts

Around 140 members of the German Wood Packaging, Pallets, and Export Packaging Association (HPE) met in Mainz for their annual spring conference. The event centred on regulatory changes, geopolitical challenges, and digital advancements in the wood packaging industry. The conference opened with discussions on the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Marcus Kirschner, HPE’s managing director, and Dr. Patrick Krampitz of Pauly Rechtsanwälte addressed its requirements and unresolved practical questions. HPE also unveiled a 150-page sector guide to assist businesses with PPWR compliance.

Fabian Häckler shared updates on the HPECycle network, designed to simplify compliance for wood packaging firms. Digital innovation took the spotlight as well, with presentations on 3D design tools and AI applications tailored for SMEs.

Geopolitical risks and their effects on supply chains were another focus. Retired Lieutenant General Christian Badia and Rob Driessen of the CONNEC3 Group spoke on resilience strategies and timber market approaches. Gordon Schnieder, the future minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate, joined the discussions, exploring opportunities and obstacles for small and medium-sized enterprises. The conference provided insights into regulatory, technological, and geopolitical factors shaping the wood packaging sector. Attendees gained access to new resources, including HPE’s detailed PPWR guide. The event underscored the need for adaptability in a rapidly changing industry landscape.
