Fresh-up for historic cable car in Augustusburg - Germany's Historic Augustusburg Funicular Closes for Annual Overhaul Until March 27

The historic Augustusburg funicular in Germany's Ore Mountains is currently closed for its annual overhaul. The 115-year-old cable car, which has carried visitors since 1911, will remain out of service until March 27. Last year, it transported nearly 80,000 passengers—far above its usual average of 50,000.

The three-week maintenance includes a full inspection of the system, replacement of worn track supports, and servicing of the pulleys. Technicians will also check the chassis, update control systems, and prepare the two cabins for spring operations. A mandatory TÜV safety inspection forms part of the overhaul.

The cable car runs a 1.2-kilometre route, climbing 168 metres in just eight minutes. Its two cabins, pulled by a steel cable, connect Erdmannsdorf with Augustusburg Castle. Regular service is scheduled to restart on March 28 after all work is completed.

Once reopened, the funicular will continue its long tradition of ferrying visitors to the castle. The overhaul ensures the system meets modern safety standards while preserving its historic operation. Passengers can expect the usual eight-minute journey when services resume later this month.
