Germany's railway overhaul brings months of delays and closures nationwide
Major railway upgrades have begun across Germany, bringing months of closures and delays. Deutsche Bahn is modernising tracks, stations, and bridges to improve long-term reliability. The work will affect thousands of daily commuters and travellers until at least 2036 on some routes.
The construction phase will last around five months for key lines, including full closures on Hagen–Wuppertal–Köln, Nürnberg–Regensburg, and the Rechte Rheinstrecke between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden. Other projects, such as Hamburg–Berlin and Köln–Gummersbach, will face disruptions until April 2026 and late March 2026, respectively. Over 40 lines nationwide will see similar work continuing until 2036.
Around 200 replacement buses have been brought in to cover local transit, while long-distance and freight services will take alternative routes. Twelve stations along the affected lines will be upgraded to meet modern accessibility standards. New noise barriers will also be installed near residential areas to reduce disturbance.
Commuters are already feeling the impact, with many reporting significantly longer journeys. One traveller described their morning commute now taking nearly an extra hour. Deutsche Bahn has warned that all passengers should check for real-time updates before travelling, as connections and schedules will change frequently.
The upgrades include renewing tracks, switches, and bridges. While the short-term effects mean slower trips and altered routes, the aim is to create a more efficient and dependable network in the long run.
The modernisation work will bring months of disruption, with longer travel times and rerouted services. Once complete, the improvements should lead to a more reliable railway system, featuring accessible stations and upgraded infrastructure. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and monitor Deutsche Bahn's updates for the latest changes.
