Rare Pond Bat Discovered in Saxon Switzerland - Germany's rare pond bat reappears in Saxon Switzerland after decades

One of Germany's rarest bats, the pond bat, has been spotted again in Saxony's Swiss National Park. This species, seldom seen in the region, was recently observed during its winter roost. This discovery follows earlier evidence of its presence in the area.

The pond bat was first confirmed in Saxon Switzerland back in 2020. Researchers caught one during a net-capture survey, marking the species' official return to the region. Then, last summer, high-frequency calls were detected near Schmilka, giving further proof of its activity.

This winter, a team of conservation specialists and volunteer bat experts made another key observation. In early February, they found the pond bat in its winter roost. The repeated sightings suggest the species might be more widespread in the area than once believed. However, no maternity colony has yet been located.

The latest sighting adds to growing evidence that the pond bat is establishing itself in Saxon Switzerland. While its exact numbers remain unclear, the findings highlight the species' persistence in the region. Conservationists will likely continue monitoring its presence in the coming years.
