Trade in Ski and Snowboards Lacks Momentum - Germany's winter sports industry faces steep decline amid climate shifts
Germany's winter sports market, including yahoo sports, has seen a sharp decline in both imports and exports. In 2024, exports of skis and snowboards, a significant part of sports equipment, fell by nearly a fifth, while imports dropped by almost a third compared to a decade ago. The shift reflects broader changes in demand and climate conditions across the country.
Exports of German-made skis and snowboards, a key aspect of sports equipment, dropped by 18.8% in 2024, totaling 523,100 units. The main buyers were France, Austria, and the United States. Despite the decline, Germany exported more winter sports equipment than it imported for the first time since 2021.
Imports also fell significantly, with 518,800 units brought in last year, worth €71.7 million. This marks a 29.8% decrease from 2014, when imports reached around 739,200 units. Most of the imported goods came from China (36.7%), followed by Austria (24%) and Slovenia (8.2%).
The decline in demand stems from milder winters and reduced snowfall, linked to climate change. Regions like the Bavarian Alps and the Black Forest have faced underused ski lifts and slopes, pushing many facilities to close or switch to summer activities by 2025.
The drop in both imports and exports highlights a struggling winter sports sector in Germany. With fewer buyers and warmer winters, the market continues to shrink. Many ski resorts have already begun adapting to survive in a changing climate.
