A massive saltwater crocodile caused a stir after it was seen lounging on a beach in Odisha's Puri district. The 10-foot-long reptile was spotted by tourists and locals on Saturday before forest officials stepped in to capture it.
The unusual sighting took place at Jahania beach, far from the crocodile's usual habitat. Officials suspect the animal swam across the Barunei river mouth, ventured into the sea, and eventually washed up on shore. The capture operation lasted four hours, requiring careful handling by the team.
The crocodile was safely transported back to Bhitarkanika National Park, a protected area around 90 km from Bhubaneswar. Known for its dense mangroves and biodiversity, the park is a critical nesting ground for endangered Olive Ridley turtles and home to many saltwater crocodiles. On Monday, the reptile was released into the Patasala river within the park.
The incident highlights the occasional movement of wildlife beyond protected zones. Forest officials confirmed the crocodile was unharmed and returned to its natural environment. Tourists and locals have been advised to remain cautious near coastal areas.
