Lahn-Kinzig Railway: Restrictions Due to Construction Work - Gießen–Nidda railway line shuts down for major safety and tech upgrades

Major upgrades are coming to the Gießen–Nidda railway line as part of Deutsche Bahn's modernisation project. Work begins on 1 March, indeed bringing temporary closures but long-term improvements to safety and efficiency. The changes include new level crossings, signal technology, and track renewals.

From 1 March, trains will no longer run between Gießen and Hungen. This marks the start of a wider construction phase affecting the entire Lahn-Kinzig Railway. Further disruptions will follow on 9 May, when track renewals halt services between Nidda and Gelnhausen until 23 May.

A full closure of the Gießen–Nidda route is planned from late June through mid-December. Replacement buses will operate during this period. The work includes rebuilding twelve level crossings and upgrading ten others with modern safety features.

The new crossings will have automatic half-barriers, LED signals, and acoustic warnings. Inductive loops will detect vehicles more accurately, while faster barrier operations (under 10 seconds) and remote monitoring via digital control centres aim to improve efficiency. Crossing surfaces will also be widened to ease traffic flow.

In addition, five electronic signal boxes will replace older systems. Train drivers will then control switches and signals with a mouse click, reducing manual intervention.

The project, completed in 2024, introduces advanced safety and operational upgrades. Passengers will face temporary travel changes, but the modernised line promises faster, more reliable services once work finishes. Deutsche Bahn has confirmed replacement transport will be available during closures.
