Greater Braunschweig's €20M digital transport upgrade finally goes live after decade-long delay
A major digital upgrade for public transport in the Greater Braunschweig region has now been completed. The project brings real-time travel updates to hundreds of stops across more than 20 municipalities. Two new digital displays in Schladen-Werla mark the final step in the long-awaited rollout. The Greater Braunschweig Regional Association launched the initiative nearly a decade ago. Its goal was to modernise passenger information with dynamic displays showing live bus and light rail times. However, progress stalled when a key manufacturer of the digital screens filed for insolvency.
Now, the system is fully operational. Around 460 large dynamic passenger information (DFI) displays stand at major stops, while 100 smaller screens serve quieter locations. In total, 560 information points provide instant updates on arrivals, disruptions and delays. Audio modules also ensure visually impaired travellers can access the same details. The project’s total cost exceeded €20 million, with the DFI screens alone accounting for €11 million. Most of the funding came from public sources: the state of Lower Saxony covered 75%, while the Regional Association contributed 12.5%. The new system also feeds data to passenger apps and online journey planners, so commuters can check times on the go.
The completed network means passengers now receive consistent, up-to-date travel information across the region. The displays and integrated apps aim to make public transport more reliable and accessible. The Regional Association will continue to oversee the system as part of its broader push for connected mobility.
