Greece unveils bold 2025 transport overhaul with electric buses and incentives
Alexis Vafeades, the Minister of Transport and Communications, has unveiled a series of new policy initiatives aimed at transforming Greece's transport sector by 2025. The plans focus on three core areas: speeding up transportation, promoting cleaner mobility, and upgrading infrastructure across the country.
Speaking at the announcement, Vafeades outlined a major push toward electromobility. While electric vehicle prices have started to fall, he acknowledged they remain out of reach for many consumers. To address this, the government will introduce a new incentive scheme running until 2030, alongside increased financial support to make electric cars more affordable.
The Minister also revealed a €21.5 million investment to expand the electric bus fleet. By 2025, the goal is to have 2,500 electric buses operating nationwide. This move aligns with broader efforts to cut emissions and modernise public transport. Beyond road transport, the government will pour funds into upgrading airports, seaports, and other key infrastructure. Road safety was another priority, with Vafeades noting a decline in accidents over the past two years. However, he stressed that further improvements are still needed.
The success of these plans, according to Vafeades, depends on teamwork. He called for close cooperation between the government, private companies, and the public to turn the policy's targets into reality. The initiatives mark a significant step in Greece's push for a faster, greener, and more efficient transport network.
