Airport Heating - Work Begins in March - Hamburg Airport and Lufthansa Technik embrace greener heating by 2028

Hamburg Airport and Lufthansa Technik will soon switch to cleaner heating. A new district heating pipeline, set for completion by late 2028, aims to cut carbon emissions by 17,000 metric tons each year. The project marks a major step in reducing the site's environmental impact.

Work on the 4.7-kilometre pipeline will start in March 2026. The route follows Otto-Wels-Straße, crossing multiple roads before reaching the airport and Lufthansa Technik facilities.

A pumping station, due for construction in spring 2027, will help maintain pressure in the network. Once operational, the system will connect both sites to Hamburg's existing district heating grid.

By the end of 2028, the pipeline should be fully functional. Beyond serving the airport and Lufthansa Technik, it could later extend to nearby homes, businesses, and commercial properties in northern Hamburg from the 2030s onward.

The completed pipeline will replace older heating methods, saving 17,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually. The project aligns with Hamburg's broader push for sustainable energy. Additional buildings in the area may benefit from the network in the following decade.
