Hamburg-Berlin rail line shuts for 11 months starting August 2025
Major rail disruptions are set to affect travellers between Hamburg and Berlin from August 1, 2025. The closure, lasting until June 13, 2026, will halt services for nearly 11 months while essential upgrades take place. Commuters are being warned of cancellations, replacement buses, and adjusted timetables in the coming weeks. The Hamburg-Berlin line will shut down for large-scale modernisation work. Tracks, switches, overhead lines, and signalling systems will all be upgraded during this period. Station improvements are also part of the project, though no further details on affected sections in Lower Saxony have been confirmed.
From May 1, regional services will begin a phased adjustment. However, alternative timetables will not be published until after Easter. Until mid-June, passengers should prepare for further cancellations, particularly on routes between Hamburg and Lüneburg. Some services will continue with changes. The hourly connection between Hamburg and Lüneburg remains in place, stopping at Winsen (Luhe) and Hamburg-Harburg. A new hourly train between Winsen and Hamburg will also run, serving all stations. Additional trips between Hamburg and Uelzen, via Lüneburg, are being added as an alternative option. Plans for extra peak-hour services between Lüneburg and Hamburg have been postponed until June 13. A two-hourly shuttle between Lüneburg and Uelzen may be introduced, though it will not offer direct links to Hamburg. Replacement buses between Lüneburg, Uelzen, Celle, and Langenhagen will mostly run as scheduled, though minor tweaks could still occur. The delays extend beyond this line. Passengers travelling between Hanover and Hamburg will also face disruptions due to ongoing construction work.
The closure will bring significant changes to rail travel in northern Germany. Replacement buses, adjusted schedules, and temporary suspensions will remain in effect for months. Passengers are advised to check updates regularly as further adjustments may be announced.
