U5 Stations Sengelmannstraße and City Nord Take Shape - Hamburg's U5 underground line takes shape with 24 stations and 315,000 daily riders

Hamburg is building a major new underground line, the U5, stretching nearly 30 kilometres across the city. The project will eventually include 24 stations and serve over 315,000 passengers daily. Work is already underway, with key milestones expected by the end of the year.

Two stations, Bramfeld and City Nord, are set to reach important construction stages before 2025 ends. City Nord will become the first U5 station to complete its shell structure, while Bramfeld will also see significant progress. Both are part of the initial six-kilometre section, which includes stops at Steilshoop, Hartzloh, Rübenkamp, Sengelmannstraße, and New-York-Ring.

At Sengelmannstraße, an interchange is being built to connect the new U5 with the existing U1 line. A second platform is scheduled to open in autumn, making transfers between the two lines faster. Meanwhile, excavation for a construction pit in Steilshoop could begin as early as this summer, provided no legal challenges delay the work.

Planning approval for the next stretch—from Borgweg to Jarrestraße in Winterhude—is expected in the second half of the year. This section will later link to Gärtnerstraße, with final station locations for the extension to Osdorf due by the end of 2026. A preliminary service between City Nord and U3 Borgweg station will start early, offering passengers a first taste of the new line.

Once fully operational, the U5 will run from Bramfeld to Volkspark, looping around the Außenalster before extending to Lurup and Osdorf by 2040. The project aims to improve transport links across Hamburg, reducing travel times and easing congestion on existing routes.

The U5 will eventually span 29 kilometres with 24 stations, carrying more than 315,000 people each day. Construction is moving forward, with key sections set to open in stages over the next two decades. The first services will begin between City Nord and Borgweg, marking the start of Hamburg's largest underground news in years.
