First Hamburg White Stork Returns - Hamburg Welcomes Its First White Stork of the Year After Nest Rescue

A white stork has landed in Hamburg's Vierlanden area, becoming the first of the birds to return to the city this year. The arrival marks the start of the annual migration, with more expected to follow in the coming weeks.

The stork touched down in the Bergedorf district, where its nest had been repaired after collapsing last season. Local firefighters and a stork expert worked together to restore the structure before the bird's return.

Since 2019, Hamburg's storks have been fitted with GPS trackers by the nature conservation group NABU. Of the tagged birds, seven remain active, including two named Jan and Marco, who have already begun their northward journey. The returning stork may have spent winter in Spain, Portugal, or even stayed in the Hamburg area—behaviour known as 'Westzieher' migration.

White storks can endure cold weather thanks to their thick plumage, but food availability determines their survival. Last year, NABU recorded 45 breeding pairs in Hamburg, raising 99 chicks, mostly in the Vier- und Marschlanden region. The city ranks among Germany's top 'stork capitals', with the final arrivals expected by late April.

The stork's return follows efforts to maintain its nest and track its movements. With more birds due to arrive soon, conservationists will continue monitoring their progress. Hamburg's stork population remains strong, supported by ongoing habitat protection.
