Hanover's S-Bahn extends Mireo Smart trains to ease construction delays

Hanover's S-Bahn has extended its temporary train replacement service using Siemens Mobility's Mireo Smart trains. The decision comes as construction continues at Plathnerstraße, requiring adjustments to local routes. Three of these modern trains have now been moved to a new line to improve reliability for passengers.

The three Mireo Smart trains were first introduced in June 2025 on the S6 route between Hanover Central Station and Celle. They operated there until March 23, 2026, when officials decided to shift them to the S3 line.

From March 23, 2026, the trains began serving the S3 connection between Lehrte and Hildesheim. This change was made to give travellers clearer schedules during the ongoing work at Plathnerstraße. The temporary replacement service, originally set to end in March, has now been confirmed for a longer period. The redeployment follows months of planning to minimise disruption. By moving the trains to the S3 line, operators aim to maintain steady service while construction progresses in the area.

The extended use of Mireo Smart trains ensures continued transport options for commuters. The S3 line will now benefit from these modern units until further notice. Officials have stressed that the move is part of efforts to keep services running smoothly during infrastructure upgrades.
