Harz Railway upgrades disrupt trains and roads until Wednesday
The Harz Narrow-Gauge Railways (HSB) has begun renovating a level crossing on the route between Eisfelder Talmühle and Drei Annen Hohne. Work will continue until Wednesday, causing temporary disruptions to both train and road services in the area. The affected section lies on the Harz Query Line, part of Germany's longest continuous narrow-gauge network. Stretching roughly 140 kilometres, the HSB system includes the Brocken Railway, the Harz Query Line, and the Selke Valley Railway.
During the renovation, trains between Eisfelder Talmühle and Drei Annen Hohne are being replaced by bus shuttles. The work involves installing track support slabs—a method inspired by model railway construction but built for durability. These slabs can last up to 70 years, far outlasting traditional materials. The construction is also affecting road users. The B242 near Sorge has been closed, with a signed detour in place to guide drivers around the site.
The upgrades will improve the crossing's long-term reliability, reducing future maintenance needs. Until Wednesday, passengers and motorists should plan for delays and follow the provided alternative routes.
