Seal ventures deep into Stormarn district - Healthy seal spotted 50 km inland, surprising German locals
A seal has been seen near the Beste river in Grabau, around 50 kilometres inland from Travemünde. The animal appeared healthy and well-fed, causing no immediate concern for local authorities. Such sightings, while unusual, are not unheard of in the region.
The seal was spotted in the Stormarn district, far from its usual coastal habitat. Experts at the Seal Station Friedrichskoog, led by Dr. Karin L. Strand, confirmed that animals occasionally travel long distances upstream if food is available.
Authorities have advised the public to keep a safe distance of 200 to 300 metres if they encounter the animal. Dog owners are also urged to keep their pets on a leash to avoid disturbing the seal.
According to the seal station, this behaviour is not rare for certain species, including harbour seals. As long as the animal remains in good condition, there is no cause for alarm.
The seal's presence in Grabau has drawn attention, but experts see it as a natural occurrence. Residents are reminded to follow guidelines to ensure both human and animal safety. The situation will continue to be monitored by local authorities.
